The New & Old Boeing 747

Lufthansa is celebrating the arrival of its latest Boeing 747, the 1,500th 747 ever built by U.S. jetmaker Boeing. The airline has affixed a special "1500th" logo to the jet to commemorate the milestone.

The jet – tail number D-ABYP – was officially handed over to Lufthansa on Saturday at Boeing's 747 assembly line facility in Everett, Wash. The carrier then flew the jet to its main base in Frankfurt, where the 1,500th 747 landed on Sunday at 9:17 a.m. local time.

"It's an honor for Lufthansa that the anniversary jumbo will fly in the colors of the Lufthansa crane," Nico Buchholz, Head of Group Fleet Management for Lufthansa, says in a statement. "For decades, Lufthansa has been one of the aircraft manufacturer's closest advisers -- a pioneer when it comes to developing new, environmentally friendly and fuel-efficient aircraft."

The milestone 747 taken by Lufthansa is the 76th 747 to be taken by the carrier since Boeing began the aircraft line in the late 1960s. It's also the 14th of Boeing's newest model of the 747 – the 747-8 Intercontinental – to join Lufthansa's fleet. The German airline expects to take 19 "Dash-8s" in total, a figure that it says will make it "the world's largest operator of 747-8s among passenger airlines."
